CFA Releases New Guidance Document on Competence in the Contract Flooring Sector

The CFA is pleased to share a new guidance document for CFA members, Competence in the Contract Flooring Sector. It has been created to support understanding of the evolving expectations around competence across the construction industry, particularly in light of the Building Safety Act and the wider changes following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The document explains why competence is a central requirement for every contractor and installer, and it outlines what is now expected from organisations and individuals working in our sector. It provides practical advice on organisational, technical and installer competence, along with guidance on how to evidence standards, manage training and support compliance on projects including higher risk buildings.

Contextualising construction industry policy, it also highlights the role of the Golden Thread, updates to pre-qualification schemes, and upcoming developments affecting contractors, manufacturers and distributors.

Through regular and specialist guidance provided as a benefit of membership, the CFA helps flooring businesses to maintain high standards, meet regulatory demands and strengthen confidence in the industry. Templates, recommendations and best practice examples are included in this document to help members demonstrate compliance and improve internal processes.

CFA members are encouraged to read the document and consider how the guidance can be implemented within their own businesses. The full document is available in the General Guidance section of the CFA Members’ Area.

The template provided in 7.2 Appendix 2 and the recommendations provided in Appendix 3 can be downloaded separately from the ‘Contractors/Associate Contractors’ section, under ‘Templates’ and ‘General Info’.

If you are not a CFA member already but are interested in the benefits of membership, find out more. For more information please contact info@cfa.org.uk or 0115 941 1126.
