Breaking the Mould: Amber Gilbert’s Inspiring Journey in Flooring

Amber Gilbert’s path into the flooring industry was shaped by family ties and a passion for hands-on work. Now 34, Amber owns and operates her family’s flooring company, Santone, based in Rochester, Kent, continuing a legacy that began with her grandparents in 1977.

Growing up, Amber was immersed in the world of flooring. She started by assisting her father with prep work and installations, quickly developing a strong skill set. After gaining experience as a sales representative for leading flooring companies, Amber found herself drawn back to installation, working weekends and between sales roles. This blend of practical and commercial experience ultimately equipped her with the expertise to successfully take the reins of her family business.

One of the aspects Amber values most about flooring is the challenge it presents. Each project demands creative thinking, particularly when working with intricate designs and LVT installations. For Amber, problem-solving on the job is not just a necessity, it is what keeps her engaged and motivated.

However, Amber’s journey has not been without obstacles. As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated trade, she has encountered her fair share of stereotypes, particularly on commercial sites. Comments questioning her presence or skills were not uncommon.

Yet Amber notes that these attitudes tend to shift once her expertise becomes evident. In fact, she believes the flooring industry is more welcoming to women than other trades, drawing on her previous experience as a qualified plumber, where she faced greater resistance.

Despite starting her career without formal qualifications, Amber’s practical learning under her father and other skilled fitters provided invaluable knowledge. Reflecting on her experience, she encourages newcomers to invest in quality kneepads and hand cream – essential tips for anyone starting out in this physically demanding role.

Amber firmly believes the industry must do more to promote flooring as a viable career option for women. Unlike mainstream trades such as plumbing or electrical work, flooring qualifications are not widely offered in colleges. Expanding training routes would help raise awareness of flooring as a respected and rewarding profession.

For women considering a career in flooring, Amber highlights the diverse opportunities available. Whether working on installations or pursuing a sales role, the industry offers creative and rewarding pathways. She emphasises that physical strength needn’t be a barrier, with the right techniques and tools, the work is achievable for anyone willing to learn.

Amber’s story underscores the value of perseverance and adaptability in forging a successful career. For those seeking a role that combines creativity, problem-solving, and pride in their work, flooring offers an exciting and worthwhile path, one where women are increasingly making their mark.
