The Background
The existing entrance at Morriston Hospital has undergone a major transformation through an extensive refurbishment project. What was once the primary entry for patients and visitors alike has now been converted into an ambulance centre entrance. This newly renovated space serves as a vital hub for emergency services, streamlining the process for admitting patients who arrive by ambulance.
The Challenge
The hospital refurbishment project posed some unique challenges due to the critical need to minimise disruption to patient care. With areas of the hospital needing to be fully functional again by 7am each morning, much of the work had to be completed during overnight shifts. This meant finding products and materials that could be installed quickly and efficiently, while still delivering long-lasting quality.
The Solution
When it came time to conduct a comprehensive site observation, the experienced team at MJ Flooring Solutions knew that thorough planning and attention to detail would be critical to success, especially given the tight 48-hour timeline they were working to.
To ensure they had the best possible roadmap in place, they reached out directly to the experts at UltraFloor. Through close collaboration, UltraFloor worked with MJ Flooring Solutions to develop a complete site specification uniquely tailored to the project’s needs.
To begin, the entire area was coated with UltraFloor DPM IT rapid curing primer membrane. DPM IT is a versatile, two-component epoxy resin system that serves a dual purpose – it acts as a damp proof membrane to shield floors from underlying moisture, and also functions as a screed bonding aid in industrial flooring applications.
Once cured, a coat of UltraFloor Prime IT Multi-surface Primer was applied. Formulated to promote adhesion to all UltraFloor smoothing underlayments, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer reduces pinholing, minimising the risk of costly failures. With a coverage rate of 200sqm at a 3:1 dilution, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer is a must-have product for all flooring installation projects.
To create the smoothest of subfloors, MJ Flooring Solutions utilised two of UltraFloor’s award-winning levelling compounds – Level IT Renovate and Level IT Hydra Bond. Developed for the renovation of existing floors, Level IT Renovate is fibre modified for added strength and to minimise the risk of hairline cracks – reducing a common cause of failure.
Suitable for deep applications from 3–40mm, Level IT Renovate is multi-purpose for extensive use and boasts excellent flow properties, making this flexible and versatile floor leveller ideal for a wide range of flooring substrates.
Level IT Hydra Bond is a ground-breaking, water-based leveller that can be applied to bitumen and adhesive residues. Formulated for use in highly trafficked areas, Level IT Hydra Bond is guaranteed to have a super smooth finish and is easy to apply – ideal for creating a lump-free subfloor, eliminating dangerous trip hazards for patients, staff and visitors moving around the hospital.
What’s more, Level IT Hydra Bond utilises UltraFloor’s unique Envirobead® Technology – a process which enhances application and boasts unrivalled flow properties. It can receive bonded floor coverings after 4 hours and has an extended working time of 45 minutes for optimal usability.
After just a few hours, the team at MJ Flooring Solutions were able to install the chosen floorcovering across the site.
Results
On completion, Matthew Jenkins from MJ Flooring Solutions shared: “The team at Morriston Hospital have never been so pleased with the outcome of the installation. The areas have been done on two different occasions by different flooring contractors and haven’t lasted, but with how this has turned out and the materials used, they are more than happy, and confident, that the job is a complete success.”
